A Remarkably Rapid Synthesis of Ruthenium(II) Polypyridine Complexes by Microwave Irradiation

Abstract: A facile synthesis method or ruthenium(II) polypyridine complexes by microwave irradiation has been developed. This method greatly reduces reaction time from 4 hours to 20 minutes with better yield(60–90%). The procedures are simple and may be used for synthesis of a variety of metal polypyridine complexes.

“…The microwave reactions were carried out in a household microwave oven modified according to a previously published description. [16] The 2,7-diacetyl-4,5,9,10-tetrahydropyrene, [15] 2,7-diacetylpyrene, [15] 1,6-, 1,8-, and 1,3-diacetylpyrene, [10] [Ru ([D 8 ]bpy) 2 Cl 2 ]·2H 2 O, [17] and 8-amino-7-quinolinecarbaldehyde (8) [11] were prepared according to known procedures. CH 3 CN used for cyclic voltammetry was dried by reflux with calcium hydride followed by distillation.…”

“…of [Ru([D 8 ]bpy) 2 Cl 2 ] to incorporate two Ru II centers at the vacant phen binding sites. This reaction was sluggish under the normal conditions of reflux in aqueous ethanol, due partially to poor solubility of the ligands, but when carried out in ethylene glycol under microwave irradiation [16] (30Ϫ40 min) yields of 19Ϫ60% of the purified complexes as their hexafluorophosphate salts were obtained.…”

“…The use of water as a solvent is also explored. A typical reactor used for organic and/or organometallic syntheses (Matsumura-Inoue et al, 1994) is presented in Fig. 3, which can be easily implemented using a domestic microwave oven.…”
