To realize a finger positioning device, as called “virtual mouse,” to replace a touchpad, touchscreen, or even real mouse, current positioning technologies cannot achieve a sufficient resolution, a compact volume, and a simple detection algorithm simultaneously. For this problem, using a light‐emitting diode source, two lens arrays, and two light sensors, we design and implement a virtual mouse prototype. The optical architecture is carefully determined for a compact volume, a sufficient resolution, and a high detection accuracy. Corresponding to a compact system volume of 3.1 mm (thickness) × 4.5 mm (length) × 2, a theoretical resolution higher than 25 pixels per inch (ppi) can be obtained over a working area of 10 cm × 10 cm. Experiments are also implemented, in which a mean detection error of 0.24 cm that corresponds to approximately two distinguishable points, and a minimal resolution of 26 ppi over the whole working area are verified. If the system thickness is relaxed to 25 mm, a resolution higher than 200 ppi can be achieved. The proposed virtual mouse, which is simple enough and potential to be extended for three‐dimensional position detection, can be integrated with a flat panel display to achieve a compact display application that can interact with users.

Virtual mouse based on IR source, lens array and light sensor was designed and implemented. Optical architecture including lens amount, lens pitch, baseline length, sensor length, lens-sensor gap, focal length etc. was carefully designed to achieve low detective error, high resolution, and simultaneously, compact system volume. System volume is 3.1mm (thickness) × 4.5mm (length) × 2, which is much smaller than that of camera-based device. Relative detective error of 0.41mm and minimum resolution of 26ppi were verified in experiments, so that it can replace conventional touchpad/touchscreen. If system thickness is eased to 20mm, resolution higher than 200ppi can be achieved to replace real mouse.

As the substitute of standard mice, 3D mice (Air mice) have been widely researched. Compared with standard mice, 3D mice are able to operate off table. Many types of 3D mice have been developed and tested for computer or TV. These 3D mice can be utilized as 3 dimensional interfaces with the PC for various applications such as 3D images and 3D games. Although most of them are more intuitive than standard mice, they pay the price of higher expense. This paper presents two intuitive, low-cost 3D mice. One is the Android phone based 3D mouse; another is the MCU based 3D mouse. Both of them implemented the same functions and share the same drive program. Setup of the project consists of a computer drive and a hand held motion detector. The motion detector measures the rate of rotation and acceleration of itself at three dimensions. And these data are then sent to the computer and converted into the movement of the cursor on the computer screen.
