A Renewed Approach to the ABC Landscape Assessment Method: An Application to Muntanyes d’Ordal, Barcelona Metropolitan Area

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to describe a renewed approach to the ABC landscape assessment method, a procedure that undertakes landscape approach considering abiotic (A), biotic (B) and cultural (C) elements shaping the landscape. This new method is organized in three nested multi-scaled levels defined with high accuracy (1:10,000; 1:20,000; 1:25,000), it combines holistic and parametric approaches and it delineates landscape units from both a typological and chorological point of view. The procedure is based on … Show more

“…The proposed procedure deliberately concentrated on nature-based criteria and provided less details concerning communication with stakeholders and authorities since these issues is a constant focus in literature (Brandt et al 2000, Selman 2006, Sayer et al 2013, Carlsson et al 2017, Trovato and Ali 2019. Unlike most planning methodologies (Dramstad et al 1996, Izakovičova 2006, Özyavuz 2012, Turner and Gardner 2015, Serrano Gine 2018, Hersperger et al 2020 to make planning proposal we applied several theoretical models of landscape pattern depending on the objective.…”

“…In the last years of the twentieth century, some of the landscape evolution studies carried out were characterised by their regional and supraregional geographical scope, type T0 and T1 of LTP (Gómez -Zotano et al 2018), such as those elaborated by Plan Blue (Benoit et al 2001) and the Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development (MCSD) (UNEP / MAP 2016). More recently, some analyses at smaller scales, subregional and supralocal, type T2 and T3 of LTP, have been carried out related to other sectors of the Mediterranean region, such as those focused on rural areas of the Spanish and Italian mountain regions (Agnoletti et al 2015;Gómez -Zotano et al2018;Serrano, 2018;Statuto etal. 2016;Tortora et al 2015).…”

“…A chorologic typology is a classification of geographic phenomena that represents causal relationships among them [57,58]. Examples of chorologic typologies combining parametric landscape typologies and holistic landscape chorologies have been documented for landscape assessments [59]. Causality can be determined regionally, based on the evidential reasoning from existing landscape ecological knowledge and visual and parametric associations among physiognomic features from available reference data or maps to colourimetric indicators in multispectral false colour images using deductive techniques-such as a process of elimination (for example [60]).…”
