A report of laryngeal adenocystic carcinoma metastatic to the spleen and the role of splenectomy in the management of metastatic disease: a case report

Abstract: IntroductionAdenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the larynx is a rare malignancy characterized by an indolent course and late pulmonary metastases. Metastases from the larynx to the spleen are an unusual event. In the present report, we discuss a patient with adenoid cystic carcinoma of the larynx metastatic to the spleen. A review of the literature did not yield any other such incidents. We review the clinical presentation and course of adenoid cystic carcinoma, as well as the role of splenectomy for metastases.… Show more

“…5 ACC is characterized by slow growth, multiple recurrences, and late distant metastasis, commonly to the lungs. 5-8 It is a rare entity in the larynx, representing <1% of all tumors occurring at this site. 2,4 It is thought to arise from submucosal glands present in a distinct anatomic distribution within the larynx.…”

“…6,10,11,14,[24][25][26] In our study, no differences were seen between lymphoma and solid tumors according to the presence of other organ involvement. In other words, when we detected a splenic tumor, there were no differences between lymphoma and solid tumors regarding the presence of other organ involvement.…”

“…It can occur in any head and neck site containing salivary gland tissue. ACC typically presents with late metastases most commonly to the lungs 1 , but can also metastasize to the brain, bone, liver, thyroid and spleen [2][3] . ACC is also known for its neurotropic tendency, accounting for local regional recurrences many years after initial presentation and treatment 4 .…”
