Geographical Tensions Within Municipalities? Evidence from Swedish Local Governments☆

“…Since 1974, contrary to most other Western European countries, Sweden has experienced de-amalgamations, now having 290 municipalities. Notwithstanding, as mentioned above, Sweden still has some of the largest municipalities among mature democracies both when it comes to population size (Swianiewicz et al 2017) and geographical size (Tavares 2015). In addition, precisely as suggested by Egger et al (2022), there has been a tendency towards intra-municipal imbalances over time through within-municipal "urbanization": between 1990 and 2018, in most municipalities, the centralort has experienced a relative increase in population, while other settlements within the municipalities have experienced a population decline (e.g., Erlingsson et al 2021:42).…”
