A representational parameter for onsetless syllables

Abstract: Syllables without consonantal onsets may be invisible for stress-assignment, reduplication, or tone. Many authors attribute this behavior to some sort of prosodic deficiency, while having little to say about cases in which onsetless syllables act as well-formed constituents. In the Onset Prominence (OP) representational environment, the ambiguous behavior of onsetless syllables is explained by means of a single representational parameter. Prosodically active initial vowels are assumed to be specified for the V… Show more

“…Since this difference appears to be systematic, we feel it should be representable in an adequate phonological framework. In the next section, we shall offer a phonological description of this difference in the Onset Prominence framework (Schwartz 2013).…”

“…By contrast, the final /k/ may not be absorbed into the preceding constituent. In Figure 6 it is placed underneath the vowel as a result of a different process referred to as submersion (Schwartz 2013). We suggest that the submersion process in quick is due to a parameter setting that enforces a more robust VC transition and allows for the possibility of unreleased stop.…”

“…However, the connection with rhythmic classes mentioned above suggests that such cross-language differences are the product of categorical parameter settings. These parameters are built into the Onset Prominence phonological framework (OP; Schwartz 2013Schwartz , 2016, in which the initial vocalic portion in CV sequences, represented as the Vocalic Onset (VO) node of structure (Schwartz 2013), is ambiguous with regard to the traditional consonant-vowel distinction. Phonetically, this portion of the signal is, strictly speaking, part of the vowel.…”

“…Glottalization may be used for emphasis, or to mark stressed initial vowels, or phrase boundaries. The phonological underpinnings of this opposition may be attributed to a parameter setting with regard to syllables lacking an onset consonant (see Schwartz, 2013b). 3 In some languages, onsetless syllables show signs of prosodic deficiency, and are not counted for prosodic processes such as stress, reduplication, or tone.…”
