A Research Agenda on Open Data Impact Process for Open Innovation

Abstract: Open data and open innovation are two topics currently attracting the attention of academics. But no previous studies consider these fields in combination while using a bibliometric approach. Thus, the aim of this paper is to understand the relationship between open innovation and open data. Two research questions have been formulated: 1) What are the main topics studied in the literature that combine both lines of research? and 2) How can the open innovation paradigm be integrated in the open data impact proc… Show more

“…Given the great utility that the reuse of open data can have for open innovation, some authors have already proposed theoretical models for to better understand the process of open innovation through open data. Corrales-Garay et al (2019b; 2020) develop a model that considers the four phases of the impact process of open data reuse proposed by Abella et al (2019a): candidate data; published data; reused data; and impact and combine it with the types of open innovation – inbound, outbound and coupled (Table 2). …”

“…Considering the objective of this paper, we will focus on the second phase of the model (Table 2), where published data is analysed. Corrales-Garay et al (2020) explain that previous literature has analysed where and how data can be published, paying special attention to Web platforms and open data portals, but that there are several topics of interest that could be new areas of research. Two of those topics are the analysis of the characteristics that an open data portal should have to publish reusable data for innovation and publishing data in a standardised format that allows for comparison between portals.…”

“…The economic, political and social importance of open data has increased exponentially in recent years (Corrales-Garay et al, 2019a). The use of open data allows for the creation of new digital services, particularly applications (Abella et al, 2015(Abella et al, , 2017, sometimes in an open innovation process that fosters stakeholder collaboration (Corrales-Garay et al, 2019b, 2020a.
