“…From the above explanations, both relationality and locatedness provide a strong foundation for understanding ethics since the others we interact with in each site have a stake in how our interactions within the site impact them. However, relationality must not be understood in the restrictive sense where the emphasis is on kinship or familial relationships (see Matolino, 2015). The reason is that both kinship and family relationships are based on affinity between us and certain others, which might prompt moral bias against distanced people and beings if we draw upon them for evaluating our moral life and what counts morally.…”

“…Matolino and Kwindingwi (2013) triggered a conversation among readers of African philosophy when they published an article in the South African Journal of Philosophy tilted “The end of Ubuntu.” to the article emphatically concluded that Ubuntu as an ethical project is a failure on two ground: (a), that contemporary conditions in the world do not support the framing of an ethic linked to Ubuntu, and (b), that those who appeal to ubuntu like the political elites do so for nefarious functions. Thaddeus Metz (2014) provided a rejoinder to the argument in the same journal titled: “Just the beginning for ubuntu: reply to Matolino and Kwindingwi,” a development that Matolino (2015) immediately responded with another article in 2015, “Metz's reply on the end of ubuntu”. Intervening in the interchanges, (Chimakonam, 2016) published in the same journal an article he titled “The end of Ubuntu or its beginning in Matolino‐Kwindingwi‐Metz debate: an exercise in conversational philosophy.”…”

“…Debate around this classification has caused significant controversies among certain scholars. [10,22,60,[85][86][87] In other words, disagreement exists among scholars regarding the classification of ubuntu as a narrative of return. What 'return' means here is also a source of controversy: while some scholars believe the phrase implies a return to some glorious past (the era of destination being the precolonial period), others argue that the phrase implies retrieving values from the past and adapting them to address contemporary issues.…”
