A REST based design for Web of Things in smart environments

Abstract: Any physical Thing is a smart object, if it is embedded with sensor(s), actuator(s), a microcontroller and a low power radio. More often these components can be fabricated in chip, as small as the size of a human thumb finger. The main vision of "Web of Things" (WoTs) is to realize connectivity of the Web to billions of such smart objects. Applications can be built on top of standards like IPv6 over Low Power Wireless Personal Area Networks (6LoWPAN) at the L3 layer and IEEE 802.15.4 at the L2 layer of the net… Show more

“…According to [17], the first wave of IoT application emphasized connecting sensors, interfacing with physical-world using lightweight communication protocols such as CoAP (Constrained Application Protocol) [8], and XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol) [45], mainly within smart city domain. Moreover, the traditional Internet Representational State Transfer Protocol (REST) idea has been used for similar applications, where event-centric approaches had been implemented to reduce number of transmitted messages [18].…”

“…Results were obtained through simulation and show that CoAP and HTTP provide similar results. In [35], the authors present a framework for M2M communications using CoAP. They also present an improved publish/subscribe mechanism also based in CoAP.…”

“…Bu mimaride kaynaklarımız URI (Uniform Resource Identifier -Tek Biçimli Kaynak Konumlayıcı) olarak adlandırılan birimler vasıtasıyla kullanıcıya iletilmektedir. CoAP öncesinde, REST mimarisinin kablosuz sensör yapıları [9] ile beraber web üzerinden kontrol edilmesine dair bazı çalışmalar olmuştur [10]. CoAP'ın yavaş yavaş standartlaşmaya başladığı sıralarda, kablosuz sensörlerde uygulanabilirliğine dair araştırmalar da yapılmıştır [11].…”
