“…The reimbursement policy of NHIRD is universal and operated by a single buyer, the government in Taiwan. All insurance claims should be scrutinized by medical reimbursement specialists and peer review according to the standard diagnostic criteria, and medical providers face administrative sanction and high financial penalties (100 times the amount of the false claim charged to the NHI Bureau) if diagnostic claims do not agree with the standard diagnostic criteria used for medical reimbursement . Therefore, the diagnosed validity of “CRC” and “suicide” based on ICD‐9 codes in this study is highly reliable.…”

“…The LHID2000 of the NHIRD comprised the database for inpatient claims in the National Health Insurance (NHI) program of Taiwan and we used this database to conduct this retrospective nationwide cohort study [19]. The mandatory NHI program of Taiwan has been launched since 1 March 1995 and this unique health care system, a government-owned single payer system, has covered approximately 99.2% of the 23.74 million residents of Taiwan [20,21]. All the citizens could fairly access the healthcare system without discrimination.…”

“…This retrospective nationwide population-based cohort study utilized the LHID2000 of the NHIRD database for inpatient claims in the National Health Insurance (NHI) program of Taiwan [23]. Our former studies have thoroughly detailed the NHI program and LHID2000 [24,25]. Furthermore, we used the 2001 International Classification of Diseases, Ninth revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) for the claim codes.…”
