“…A similar paradigm had been used by Miller, Hersen, Eisler and Elkin (1974), for example. Small quantities of a variety of three alcoholic and three non-alcoholic drinks were provided to clients who were then asked to rate them, whilst unsupervised, on a variety of dimensions.…”

“…Although cue reactivity seems to be a robust phenomenon, the question arises as to its ability to predict relapse following abstinence. Measures obtained in the laboratory may bear little relation to actual relapse; even samples of consummatory behaviors may be subject to multiple influences, rendering them questionable as analogues to real-world behavior (although see Miller, Hersen, Eisler, & Elkin, 1974). However, some studies support the relation between cue reactivity and relapse.…”

“…To unobtrusively measure levels of beer consumption, we asked participants to taste and then rate beverages on characteristics including taste, price, and color during a 15-min drinking period in accord with procedures elaborated by Marlatt, Demming, and Reid (1973). This procedure has been shown to be sensitive to levels of alcohol consumption in alcoholics versus social drinkers and has been successfully used to predict alcohol treatment outcome (Miller, Hersen, Eisler, & Eichler, 1974) and ad libitum drinking rates for alcoholic women (Tracey, Karlin, & Nathan, 1974). Test-retest reliability after 6 weeks was .72 for a group of 12 male social drinkers (Marlatt, Pagano, Rose, & Marques, 1975).…”
