A Retrospective Cephalometric Study for the Quantitative Assessment of Relapse Factors in Cover-Bite Treatment

Abstract: The average relapse was ca. 20% of the total correction of the anterior linguoversion and deep bite, with the relapse tendency, however, displaying substantial interindividual variations. Multiple regression analysis revealed an increased relapse tendency in specific cases: patients with maxillary extractions, cases with a pronounced therapeutically induced change of upper central incisor inclination, and patients with a high post-therapeutic LipL or with poor compliance in the retention phase. In view of the … Show more

“…Reproducibility of the cephalometric method applied in this study was evaluated in an earlier investigation [18], in which identical cephalometric measurements were taken by the same examiner. In that study, 19 cephalometric parameters were measured a second time for the entire collective of Diskussion Gegenstand der vorliegenden Studie war die Evaluation der Interrelationen zwischen dem Ausprägungsgrad des Steilstandes der mittleren oberen Inzisivi sowie anderern skelettalen, dentoalveolären und (Weichteil-)Parametern.…”

“…This is an extremely high percentage, especially when one considers the presence of a number of factors potentially reducing this value, such as (1) methodological limitations (e.g. restricted measurement accuracy as described before, or the general limitations of conventional cephalometric analysis [25,27]), (2) possible co-factors for retroclination of the maxillary central incisors not considered in our study (e.g., reduced mesiodistal tooth dimensions in the upper anterior dental arch [9,31], or alterations in the crown-root morphology of the maxillary centrals [23]), (3) the progressive tendency of retroclination of the maxillary central incisors with increasing age [6] (in a study sample including both adolescent and adult patients this additional influence factor on the inclinational variabilDie Reproduzierbarkeit der in dieser Studie angewandten kephalometrischen Methode wurde bereits im Rahmen einer früheren Untersuchung evaluiert [18], wobei in beiden Studien identische kephalometrische Messungen durch denselben Untersucher durchgeführt wurden. Diese früheren statistischen Auswertungen beinhalteten Wiederholungsmessungen von 19 repräsentativen Variablen für das gesamte Kollektiv von 40 ehemaligen Deckbiss-Patienten sowie die anschließende Berechnung der oberen und unteren Toleranzintervalle nach Bland & Altman [4].…”
