A retrospective clinical study of fixed tooth- and implant-supported prostheses in titanium and cobalt-chromium-ceramic: 5–9-year follow-up

Abstract: Objectives The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the clinical outcome of fixed tooth- and implant-supported protheses manufactured in porcelain veneered cobalt-chromium (CoCr) or titanium with a follow-up period of 5–9 years. Materials and methods This study included 63 patients with a total of 86 fixed dental protheses (FDPs) (53 implant-supported and 33 tooth-supported). In total, 67 were short-span FDPs (3–5 units) and 19 were long-span FD… Show more

“…Low oral pH can lead to chemical corrosion. In long-term observations, reports in the literature confirm the low failure rate associated with the use of crowns and bridges on a titanium base [ 2 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ]. Initially, titanium was used for the substructures in a technically clean condition (CAD/CAM Kavo Everest procedure).…”

“…(51) The extensive length of the FDPs and the higher number of abutments compared to our retrospective study could have negatively influenced the results. (51,62,63,92) The number of abutments has been shown to affect the mean life-span of FDPs with higher mean life-span for FDPs with two abutments compared to FDPs with three or more abutments. (93) A higher number of abutments for FDPs may force clinicians to over-prepare the abutments to establish the path of insertion, which could reduce retention and resistance form and lead to loss of retention (40,93) which has been a common complication in FDPs.…”

“…These factors may reduce the quality and reliability of retrospective studies. (92) One of the limitations of Study II was the low number of included FDPs considering the extensive period of 1981 to 2018 and taking into account all different treatment providers; dental students, general practitioners, and specialists. As cantilever FDPs represent very specific challenges from the perspective of abutment tooth vitality aspects, (138,162) these were excluded.…”
