“…Our results are substantially worse than previously published (Bell et al, 2011;Blount et al, 2013;Clarke et al, 2011;Jorheim et al, 2009;Nilsson et al, 2005Nilsson et al, , 2010Park et al, 2012;Richard et al, 2014). Nilsson et al (2010) suggested that with preoperative antibiotics, complications can be avoided, yet all our patients received pre-and postoperative antibiotics.…”

“…The few existing studies showed diverse results. While some of the studies demonstrate very good results with improved thumb function (Bell et al, 2011;Diao, 2009; Park et al, 2012), other studies showed high complication rates (Blount et al, 2013;Clarke et al, 2011;Jorheim et al, 2009;Richard et al, 2014;Robinson and Muir, 2011). We report our results in 14 patients with painful thumb carpo-metacarpal joint osteoarthritis (OA) (Eaton and Littler Stages 3 and 4) or isolated scaphotrapezio-trapezoid (STT) OA surgically treated by implantation of an Artelon spacer.…”

“…3,4 Later reviews described good outcome with improved pinch and tripod grip but high complication rates due to painful foreign body synovitis which required removal of implant if the pain persisted. [5][6][7][8][9] Comparative studies of the use of the biodegradable Artelon spacer with a simple trapeziectomy or LRTI procedure showed symptomatic improvement in both groups, with higher morbidity in the interposition arthroplasty group due to synovitis and ongoing pain. 3,[10][11][12][13] The article reporting on outcomes of the bioabsorbable RegJoint showed improved pain and increased strength at a mean of 3-year follow-up.…”

“…Comparative studies between an LRTI procedure and partial trapezial excision and interposition arthroplasty performed with the PyroDisk implant and early results of the Artelon implant and autologous tendon graft, as well as a comparative study of the use of OrthoADAPT, GraftJacket, and Artelon, show pain relief, functional improvement, and patient satisfaction, although none of the interposition materials were superior to the other. 1-21,32 Closer assessment shows that pain improvement and patient satisfaction were lower in the Artelon group, despite improved pinch and tripod grip, compared with the trapeziectomy and LRTI group. 12…”
