A Retrospective Observational Study of the Epidemiology of Advanced Gastric Cancer in Germany

Abstract: Aim: This retrospective observational study aimed to evaluate the epidemiology of advanced gastric cancer (GC) in Germany. Methods: Data were extracted from the Betriebskrankenkassen (BKK) database, which consists of different company health insurance funds throughout Germany and contains anonymized records of medical services. Patient data were retrospectively reviewed from January 2008 and followed prospectively until 31st of December 2011. The identification of GC patients (ICD-10 C16) was based on data fr… Show more

“…Incident migraine cases in the CSFD were calculated similarly, with an exception for the year 2008: a case was considered incident if the first migraine diagnosis appeared at least 1 year after enrolment. Study sample population (CSFD) estimates of prevalence and incidence underwent age-and gender-adjusted extrapolation to the entire population of the SHI [18]. Administrative prevalence and incidence values are reported as weighted means with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs), based on 54% (2008-2013) or 53% (2014-2016) of the SHI population being female.…”

“…The BKK data include up to 5.2 million insured persons in Germany and allow analysis of a spectrum of health outcome measures. BKK data have been used to study asthma [ 34 ], acute coronary syndromes treated with percutaneous coronary intervention [ 35 ], type 2 diabetes [ 36 ], advanced gastric cancer [ 37 ], and testicular cancer [ 38 ], but not SLE. Although healthcare delivery differs, trends identified in Germany may be representative across Europe because typical European medical guidelines have similarities.…”

“…To calculate the crude incidence rate for the GKV, the study sample population (BKK) estimates underwent age- and gender-adjusted extrapolation to the total GKV population using published methods [ 17 ].…”
