A Retrospective Study of Abattoir Condemnation Due to Parasitic Infections: Economic Importance in Ahwaz, Southwestern Iran

Abstract: A 5-yr retrospective study in livestock slaughtered in abattoirs was carried out in Khuzestan Province (southwestern Iran) to determine the prevalence of parasitic infections responsible for condemnation of slaughtered animals' carcasses and viscera. The economic importance of such infections in terms of lost meat and offal were also estimated. Between 20 March 2006 and 19 March 2011, 125,593 cattle, 1,191,871 sheep, 240,221 goats, and 25,010 buffalos were slaughtered in the study area; the livers of 58,753 (3… Show more

“…They estimated those findings were related to the level of acquired intestinal immunity to the cestodes in various endemic conditions. The studies from Razavi Khorasan (Borji et al 2011;Borji et al 2012a) and different parts of Iran (Rokni 2009;Borji and Parandeh 2010;Borji et al 2012b) confirm the fact that Iran is an endemic area for E. granulosus. However, Eslami and Hosseini (1998), Maleky and Moradkhan (2000) and Razmi et al (2006) noted that agedependent difference was not significant.…”

“…In a 5-year study of abattoirs in nine districts in the northeastern province of Khorasan, an estimated 52.2% of the livestock viscera condemnations were due to CE (Borji and Parandeh, 2010). The corresponding figure in a similar 5-year study in southwestern province of Khuzestan was 29.2% (Borji et al, 2012a). Several surveys in Iran have indicated CE prevalence in livestock ranging from 1.3 to 74.4% in sheep, 0.4e37.8% in goats, 1.3e40.1% in cattle, 4.3e31.9% in buffalo, 8.8e35.5% in camels and 2% in donkeys (Ahmadi, 2005;Ahmadi and Meshkehkar, 2011;Eslami et al, 2014;Samavatian et al, 2009).…”

“…Helminth infections, in particular gastrointestinal nematodes, are found worldwide and are among the most economically important diseases in goats [4, 17, 21, 35, 37]. Control of gastrointestinal nematodes is predominantly based on the use of anthelmintic drugs, but the emergence of anthelmintic resistance (AR) in trichostrongyles in the last three decades represents a major threat to the production of goats [25, 28].…”
