A review and classification of empirical research in operations management

Abstract: The progress in the use of empirical research methods has been a topic of interest in the Operations Management (OM) area for the last 15 years. It is considered desirable to accompany traditional OM research, which develops and tests theories using mathematics, modelling, and simulation, with research that makes use of empirical data. The use of empirical research helps support the understanding of OM practices within industry. This paper expands and updates previous literature review studies dealing with emp… Show more

“…With the call from pioneers to focus on "macro-oriented" and "management-oriented" topics, the level of analysis has gradually become strategic through the study of topics that are closely associated to the management of operations (Scudder and Hill 1998;. Today, the level of analysis is increasingly external as well as strategic in nature due to the rapid proliferation of inter-organizational and inter-disciplinary research that focuses on analyzing global supply chain networks (Buhman, Kekre, and Singhal 2005;Gupta, Verma, and Victorino 2006).…”

“…This methodology has been widely used to identify the main lines of research in disciplines such as management (Mentzer and Kahn, 1995;Scudder and Hill, 1998;Acedo et al, 2001;Carter and Ellram, 2003;Ventovuori et al, 2007) and marketing (Ngai, 2003;Martín-Ruiz et al, 2006;Schibrowsky et al, 2007;Das, 2009), contrary to what has occurred in agricultural economics or the economics of natural resources. In these disciplines, the few studies carried out have been supported by techniques of a qualitative type (e.g.…”
