A review of boiling heat transfer characteristics in binary mixtures

Abstract: This paper reviews the state-of-the-art knowledge of boiling heat transfer in binary mixtures, special emphasis is placed on refrigeration industry. The advantage of using refrigerant mixtures over pure refrigerants include the enhancement of coefficient of performance (COP), better match with the desired thermal load and safer, more environmental-friendly refrigerants. In other words, the concept of using mixtures enables more flexibility for the selection of suitable working fluids in particular applications… Show more

“…This reduction is well known for nucleated pool boiling. [ 59 ] The investigation of the nucleated pool boiling of water–ethanol mixtures shows an apparent reduction of the heat transfer coefficient with increasing ethanol mole fraction. [ 60 ] However, we used finned tubes as a heat exchanger in the evaporator to apply thin‐film evaporation.…”

“…In contrast to pure fluids, zeotropic mixture refrigerants such as R448A are prone to heat transfer degradation in both nucleate boiling and convective boiling (Zhang [20], Xu [21], and Shah [22]). During nucleate boiling, the more volatile components evaporate first, which resulted in vapor bubbles rich in the more volatile components, while the bulk liquid has a higher concentration of the less volatiles components.…”

“…A number of previous research works have conducted investigations on the nucleate boiling of binary mixtures on surfaces that are either plain or smooth. 35 These studies were conducted under steady-state and atmospheric pressure conditions, covering a broad spectrum of compositions, from pure components to diluted mixtures. The objective of these studies was to formulate empirical models for the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) on untextured surfaces.…”

“…Nucleate boiling encompasses the creation, expansion, and release of vapor bubbles from heated surfaces, and these processes can be tuned by utilizing porous and wicked interfaces that enhance heat transfer characteristics by facilitating capillary wicking and augmenting nucleation sites. While the nucleate boiling mechanisms of pure components and mixtures on plain surfaces ,,, are well-understood, the effects of surface characteristics on binary mixture nucleate boiling heat transfer remain underexplored.…”
