A Review of Climate Change Impacts to Oil Sector Critical Services and Suggested Recommendations for Industry Uptake

Abstract: Climate change already has far-reaching impacts on the oil industry, putting the operation, reliability, and growth of the sector at risk. Oil infrastructure has multi-decadal lifetime projections; thus, climate change and extreme weather events such as extreme temperatures, hurricanes, high winds, lightning strikes, storm surges, flooding, etc., pose an extra challenge to the oil supply chain, from upstream to downstream. In this paper, we review the climate change risk assessment frameworks, the impacts of c… Show more

“…As climate change intensifies, fossil fuel production facilities face increasing risks, including sea level rise and extreme weather (Katopodis & Sfetsos, 2019). In this context, countries increasingly mention fossil fuel production in their NDCs in the context of adaptation.…”

“…Petrochemical industry -Extreme weather events including extreme temperatures, storm surges, flooding, strong winds and extreme precipitation from tropical cyclones, dust and sandstorms pose a critical challenge to the reliability and durability of the oil supply chain from extraction, refining and processing, to export; in particular as much of the refinery infrastructure is located in low-lying coastal areas 91,109 . Rising temperatures also impact on processes such as liquefaction and refining which are very temperature-dependent, and increasing aridity in the region will impact on access to water resources for refinery processes 110 .…”

“…In this century, one set of risks that will become increasingly important will be the threat of global heating and the vulnerabilities to the energy system and energy consumers to these threats [7]. This is in large part because most of today's energy systems were not designed to be resilient to the risks of global heating, such as extreme weather events, sea-level rise, droughts, and forest fires [8][9][10]; for example, in countries that rely on reliable supplies of water for power generation, such as cooling water in thermal power stations or predictable weather patterns for hydroelectricity [11].…”
