A Review of Data Envelopment Analysis in Airline Efficiency: State of the Art and Prospects

Abstract: The rapid development of the aviation industry has brought about the deterioration of the climate, which makes airline efficiency become a hot issue of social concern. As an important nonparametric method, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), has been widely applied in efficiency evaluation. This paper examines 130 papers published in the period of 1993–2020 to summarize the literature involving the special application of DEA models in airline efficiency. The paper begins with an overall review of the existing lit… Show more

“…For example, the literature proposes a "freight transport energy productivity" indicator to quantify the freight productivity of current and future freight systems and to measure the efciency of freight networks [12] and proposes a method to determine the weights of the Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) in the context of double frontier Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) measures freight efciency [13], introduces the SBM-undesirable model to systematically analyze the time-series evolution of comprehensive transport efciency in China [14], and proposes a DEA model and a Tobit regression model to measure the geographical comprehensive transport efciency [15]. In addition, some literature has also addressed the measurement of road and rail transport efciency [16][17][18] and summarized the research on civil aviation transport efciency [19]. Some literature has examined green travel and energy efciency in integrated transport.…”

“…In the relevant research on the transportation evaluation index, the construction of a measurement system based on transport prices combined with transport volumes circumvents the evaluation of transport efciency dimensions [3][4][5], and the indicators chosen focus on changes in scale, which cannot accurately refect the quality of development. Te commonly used transportation efciency evaluation mainly adopts input and output indicators [13,[15][16][17][18][19], but the acquisition of input indicators is not complete, and there is an obvious lag between input and output in the feld of transportation. It is difcult to directly and accurately refect the current state of transportation efciency by using input and output indicators to evaluate it.…”

“…The DEA presupposes the possibility of linear combinations of the observed input-output bundles (26) . DEA is a critical decision tool for assessing the performance of decision-making units and has been applied in a variety of sectors for management control and organizational evaluation (13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19)29) . DEA performance indicators do not assign weights; this process is by mathematical programs associated with the analyzed points to determine the best possible efficiency score (27) .…”

“…DEA approach has been applied across different research domains such as environmental, banking and finance, health sector, educational sector, transport, airline, tourism, and many more because it is popular and robust (13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19) . The use of DEA for benchmarking in ports is wide globally, particularly in developed economies (2,6,8,(20)(21)(22) .…”

“…Yükselen çalışan ücretleri, yakıt maliyetleri ve altyapı maliyetleri havayolu firmalarının yükünü gün geçtikçe artırmaktadır. Havayolu firmalarının operasyonlarını sürdürebilmeleri ve sürekli değişen çevrede büyüyebilmeleri için operasyonel etkinliklerini arttırmaları son derece önem arz etmektedir (Cui & Yu, 2021).…”
