A Review of Dimension Stone Extraction Methods

Karandagoda Gamage Anjana Udara Samarakoon,
Samarasuriya Patabendige Chaminda,
Chulantha Lakmal Jayawardena
et al.

Abstract: This review paper examines extraction methods in the dimension stone industry. Traditional techniques, like thermal shock, hammer and chisel, and plug and feather, were used historically. However, advancements in technology have led to the adoption of mechanized methods. Diamond wire cutting is a highly efficient technique that reduces waste and ensures quality. Challenges like high costs and wire breakage remain. Circular diamond saws and frame sawing are explored as alternative methods. Stone characteristics… Show more

“…The diamond wire cutting method has some disadvantages, such as the high risk of hazards. In contrast, the chainsaw machine cutting method offers increased safety, better quality of extracted stone block, and ease of work (Bustillo Revuelta, 2021, Mikaeil et al, 2021, Samarakoon et al, 2023. Generally, dimension stone quarrying involves risks such as wire cut failures, workloads, rockfalls, driving accidents, falls of mining vehicles and staff from the bench, electrical shock, and fire (Esmaeilzadeh et al, 2022).…”

“…The extensive historical usage of dimension stones as construction materials underscores their enduring significance throughout mankind's existence. From the monumental pyramids of Egypt to the inspiring sculptures meticulously crafted by Michelangelo, diverse types of natural stones have been harnessed by human ingenuity for architectural endeavors [3]. The great heritage and historical values of ornamental and dimension stones ("Heritage Stones") in European cities, together with their high aesthetic value, make this market potentially very valuable.…”
