A Review of Downhole Separation Technology

Abstract: In recent years, a technique of separating water downhole to reduce the volume of produced water and decrease the chance of surface pollution has been developed. It is called downhole oil-water separation (DOWS) technology. This technique allows water to be separated in the wellbore and injected into a suitable injection zone downhole while oil with traces of water is produced to the surface. Subsequent to the introduction of the DOWS technology to the oil industry in the 1990's, several tria… Show more

“…The down-hole water-gas separation systems currently available in the industry are relatively expensive ($120,000-$300,000), and still face several technical challenges (Ogunsina and Wiggins, 2005). For the given CBM water disposal volumes it is generally more cost effective to use individual well pumps to lift the decreasing water volumes from each well, and then re-inject a combined larger volume gathered from multiple wells into a dedicated water disposal well.…”

“…With the high water cut stage coming, recovery efficiency of oil well and production decline. At the same time, cost of the water treatment and oil production increase sharply, and then the overall economic benefit gets worse [1] .The effective way to solve the above problems is to establish a downhole oil-water separation system and form a well combination of injection and production, which can separate preliminary water from oil-water production [2,3] . Compared with the traditional drilling string, the components of the new string downhole oil-water separation process is increased [4] , this will change the string system's inherent frequency and vibration characteristic, cause fatigue fracture, structural damage and other problems.…”
