A Review of Engineering Research in Sustainable Manufacturing

Abstract: Sustainable manufacturing requires simultaneous consideration of economic, environmental, and social implications associated with the production and delivery of goods. Fundamentally, sustainable manufacturing relies on descriptive metrics, advanced decisionmaking, and public policy for implementation, evaluation, and feedback. In this paper, recent research into concepts, methods, and tools for sustainable manufacturing is explored. At the manufacturing process level, engineering research has addressed issues … Show more

“…Nevertheless, their basic understanding of the relevant processes and systems is used in this paper. A similar scheme is applied by Haapala et al (2013). In contrast to all other publications, they identify production planning and scheduling as key element of sustainable manufacturing and briefly describe selected articles.…”

“…Yet, product manufacturers continue to struggle with how to set, assess, and achieve sustainability goals, which encompass economic, environmental, and social factors. To meet this challenge, the research community has developed many approaches, several of which are highlighted in the sections below and many others which have been reviewed by other authors at length (e.g., Baumann et al, 2002;Duflou et al, 2012;Gold et al, 2010;Haapala et al, 2013;Ilgin and Gupta, 2010;Ramani et al, 2010;Sarkis et al, 2011;Seuring and Müller, 2008;Subramanian et al, 2010;Umeda et al, 2012) in the areas of product design, product manufacturing and assembly, demanufacturing and remanufacturing, and supply chain management. Seuring and Müller (2008) synthesized an extensive literature review of 191 scholarly articles on sustainable supply chain management published during 1994e2007.…”

“…En la actualidad, la ingeniería se enfrenta a retos muy grandes que están íntimamente relacionados con el cotidiano manejo inadecuado de los recursos naturales (Haapala et al, 2013). Cuando enmarcamos estos retos en un contexto presupuestario y espaciotemporal ajustado, como sucede actualmente en los mercados mundiales, la implicación directa es que la innovación se convierte en un aliado directo dentro de la disciplina (Brem & Ivens, 2013).…”
