A Review of Ground Heat Exchangers for Cooling Application in the Malaysian Climate

Abstract: The ground heat exchanger (GHE) is one of the energy sources that has been identified since the 1970s which is able to produce sustainable energy for cooling which is in passive side. GHEs are widely implemented around the world, especially in European countries and a few Asian countries. In Malaysia, application of GHE is still considered as a new passive cooling approach in building energy reduction. Therefore, this paper reviews several important ways of implementing GHE in order to supply passive cooling f… Show more

“…The deeper ground level, the bigger thermal inertia so that it reduces the ground temperature fluctuation. This finding is consistent with the previous researches that the temperature changes are negligible as the ground level of depth increase [9,11,16]. This result also confirmed the research conducted by Andrarini et al using simulation tool (i.e., EnergyPlus) to predict the ground temperature in Indonesia.…”

“…To achieve the optimum performance of the ground cooling system, some parameters should be considered. Researchers found that the ground temperature is the most critical parameter that affecting the heat transfer of the ground cooling system and thermal storage for energy sources [8][9][10]. The ground temperature is used to provide cooled air for the building thank to the thermal property of the ground (i.e.…”

“…The analysis was conducted with flowrate of 0.02 to 0.2 kg/s, air inlet temperature (Tair) of 35°C and 100 mm size of PVC pipe class D according to MS 628 Standard. Ground temperature is taken at minimum temperature of the depth of 2 metre below the ground surface [20][21][22]. Table 1 tabulates characteristic and condition of the pipe used in the study.…”

“…Bordoloi collects the latest advancements, presenting different combinations of EAHEs and their thermal performances [6]. The reviews of Ozgener [7], Sigh [8], Ascione [9], and Yusof [10] present studies conducted on EAHEs (earth to air heat exchanger systems) in Turkey, India, Italy, and Malaysia, respectively, giving some indication about performances, costs, and perspectives.…”
