A review of kentriodontine dolphins (Cetacea; Deiphinoidea; Kentriodontidae): Systematics and biogeography

Abstract: Fossil dolphins belonging to the extinct family Kentriodontidae are small to medium‐sized toothed cetaceans, which probably include the ancestors of some living species. Kentriodontids are known from rocks of Late Oligocene to Late Miocene age in various parts of the world. Among kentriodontids, species in the subfamily Kentriodontinae (e.g. species of Kentriodon Kellogg, 1927) are the most ubiquitous and generalized; these are now known from latest Oligocene to earliest Miocene strata in New Zealand and Patag… Show more

“…Although several attempts have been made to clarify the phylogenetic relationships among established subfamilies and genera (e.g. Barnes 1978Barnes , 1985Muizon 1988aMuizon , 1988bDawson 1996a), the monophyly of the subfamilies could not be demonstrated synapomorphically (Muizon 1988a(Muizon , 1988bIchishima et al 1994).…”

“…Signi¢cant sea-level rise would transform these regions into shallow waterways of mixed £uvial and marine origin. Several fossil locales in nearby Japan con¢rm the presence of odontocetes in the western Paci¢c during the Miocene (Ichishima et al 1995), potential colonizers of the Asian epicontinental seas. Our scenario is consistent with the geographical occurrence of the mandibular fragment known as Prolipotes, inland of the Yujiang river delta in southern China.…”
