A Review of Literature Relating to JIT

Abstract: A review of recent literature is presented relating to general Just‐in‐Time (JIT) philosophy, its supply bases and on the formalised and mathematical models. JIT has become a subject of much interest and some little controversy in recent years and has attracted the interest of many major manufacturing organisations in the West as well as in Japan where it was originally developed. A growing and developing literature on this subject has been published particularly since the late 1970s. An attempt is made to dra… Show more

“…Various sets of dimensions have been proposed to characterise JIT, but no consistent proposal clearly emerged until 1992. Despite the volume of publications (Sohal et al 1988;Ramarapu et al 1995), wide empirical studies on the impact of JIT on performance were very limited (Forza and Di Nuzzo 1998). We have found one survey-based study in the UK and four in the USA (Kim and Lee 1989; Golhar et al 1990; Inman and Mehra 1990; Stamm and Golhar 1991).…”

“…On the basis of the available literature about the above mentioned flexibilities (Bartezzaghi & Turco, 1989;Bateman, 1999;Mendonça-Tachizawa & Giménez-Thomsen, 2007;Parker & Wirth, 1999;Sohal et al, 1989) The second novel contribution of this work is related to the extension of a combined use of Case…”

“…To quantitatively appraise flexibility vs. efficiency gains, we refer to commonly agreed measures (Bateman, 1999;Mendonça-Tachizawa & Giménez-Thomsen, 2007;Shah & Ward, 2003;Sohal, Keller & Fouad, 1989) such as:…”

“…A large body of descriptive literature has developed as a result (Ohno, 1978;Schonberger, 1982;Sohal et al, 1989). Also, there is a trend towards analytical and quantitative approaches (Jordan, 1988), and the use of simulation in modeling JIT systems (Huang et al, 1983;Ebrahimpour and Fathi, 1985;Gaines and Shaw, 1985;Schroer et al, 1985;Fellers, 1986).…”
