A review of low voltage ride-through techniques for photovoltaic generation systems

Abstract: The rapid development of photovoltaic (PV) generation systems has made the low voltage ride-through (LVRT) techniques, which is stepping forward fast, more and more important. This paper presents a review of LVRT techniques for PV generation systems, which mainly focuses on the critical techniques of fault detection and grid synchronization, current control and dc-link voltage control under various voltage dip operation conditions and overall solutions for a large-scale PV station with detailed illustration. “…Power balance control, or DC-link voltage control, is often integrated into the above control strategies and aims to maintain power balance and stable DC-link voltage [84]. As described above, the contradiction between grid current quality and DC-link voltage oscillation cannot be solved simultaneously under unbalanced voltage fault.…”

“…Even though LVRT regulation issues for wind farms is a welldeveloped research topic, for PV inverters, it is not as well established as other distributed generations like doubly-fed wind turbine generator system. Moreover, the specific requirements and standards of LVRT regulation issues vary from country to country [17]. The LVRT limiting curves defined by different countries is depicted in Figure 2.…”

“…During recent years, several review articles have shone a light on the LVRT capability of GCPV systems [16], [18], [21], [31] - [49]. However, none of the articles have provided a detailed classification and critically reviewed the recently developed modified inverter control techniques for the LVRT capability of PV systems.…”
