A review of mechanical drilling on fiber metal laminates

Abstract: The use of fiber metal laminates (FML) in aeronautics components has been increased in the last years, mainly due to the gain in mechanical properties combined with low specific mass. However, in the assembly of these materials on the structures to which they will be attached, mechanical screwing is still the main method used, which requires the performance of drilling processes. Something it is very complicated for these materials and can cause damage that compromises the performance. Therefore, this work aim… Show more

“…51 It is worth noting that the damping factors of the Al 2 O 3 -SAJs are higher than those of the SiC-SAJs. This behavior was consistent with increasing the enclosed area by the hysteresis loops of the Al 2 O 3 -SAJs, Figure 15(c), compared to both NE and SiC-SAJs and thus, decreasing their dynamic modulus, Figure 17, which has inverse relationship with tan δ, equation (6).…”

“…In consideration of corrosion, weight, and stress concentration the bonded joints are preferred than bolted and/or riveted joints in which the drilled holes are always accompanied with delamination, fiber frying (burr), spalling, chipping, thermal degradation, and edge chipping 6,7 that significantly reduce the performance of the composite materials.…”

“…[3,4] These properties come together with the weight reduction of the structure and the increased corrosion resistance and thermal insulation. [5] In the aeronautic and aerospace fields, the majority of the hybrid metal laminates need to be assembled together to form complex structures. The connection between metal sheet and composite laminas is normally carried out through mechanical fastening thus requiring the drilling of a large number of holes into the structures.…”

“…As a consequence, drilling such components may lead to delamination damages and low-quality surfaces that lastly affect the FML in-service performances. To avoid delamination and reduce thrust forces when drilling stacked composites, the geometry of the drill bit can play a major role, but documentation on FMLs is still scarce [11]. In this context, the current research work aims at investigating the drillability of a TFML obtained via HMP composed of two AZ31B magnesium alloy external sheets and a core of PA6-GFRP.…”
