Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is a low-cost additive manufacturing method with moderate tolerances and high design flexibility. Ample studies are being undertaken for modeling the mechanical properties of FDM by using the Finite Element Method (FEM). The process technique of FDM results in anisotropic inner structures that are affected by the chosen manufacturing parameters. Moreover, composite filaments, such as fiber-reinforced polymers, have anisotropy even in filament form before FDM printing. These anisotropic effects are needed to be examined and incorporated for an adequate model. In order to speed up the design stage, we aim to prepare a practical method for simulating the mechanical properties of FDM-printed fiber-reinforced polymer composites. In this work, we computed the homogenized material properties for various fiber lengths, fiber volume percentages, and fiber orientations by asymptotic homogenization at the microscale. Then, mesoscale simulations are carried out through FEM simulations by incorporating the influences of process parameters. In this way, we demonstrate the effect of various micro- and mesostructural features on the homogenized properties step by step.

The present investigation utilizes tobacco stalks flour and magnesium oxysulfate whiskers as fillers to enhancers the recycle polypropylene through melt blending and injection molding. Studied the microscopic morphology, mechanical, thermal, and antibacterial properties of recycled polypropylene (rPP) based composites with different weight ratios of tobacco stalks flour (TSF) and magnesium oxysulfate whiskers (MOSw). Composites’ morphological studies indicated that tobacco stalks flour, and recycled polypropylene has good adhesion, improving composites’ mechanical properties. The addition of TSF did not significantly change the tensile strength of rPP, but it can effectively increase the flexural strength and flexural modulus. Compared with rPP, adding 30 wt% tobacco stalks flour to rPP can increase the flexural strength by about 32.74%. Meanwhile, the addition of magnesium oxysulfate whiskers further improves the material’s tensile strength. An increase in tobacco stalks flour content in the rPP enhances the crystallization temperature and degree of crystallinity of the polymer. In addition, attributed to the existence of tobacco stalks flour hydrophilic and antibacterial ability, the water absorption of the hybrid composites was increased and obtained antibacterial ability. Hence, this study provides a new development idea for tobacco stalks r recycling and applications.

One of the existing priorities of the European Union is to search for rational waste management and to keep such waste in the economic cycle, while meeting the highest safety requirements. The paper presents the results of environmental tests of composites based on the polyethylene (rPE) and polypropylene (rPP) matrix and reinforced with cellulose fibres (newsprint, NP). Raw materials were obtained by recycling post-consumer waste such as beverage bottles and newsprint. The composites were tested for their potential use as materials in cladding panels and acoustic barriers. Given that normative documents for these products do not define specific environmental requirements, the composites were tested for the release of dangerous substances, such as anions of inorganic compounds, heavy metals, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and their impact on the environment. A detailed in-depth analysis of the mechanisms of release of substances (diffusion, dissolution, surface leaching and depletion) from the rPP/NP composite into surface water, groundwater and soil was carried out. In turn, emission of VOCs from the rPE (low-density:high-density (LD:HD)—50:50) and rPE (LD:HD—30:70) composites into indoor air was also carried out. Raw materials in the form of granulates and loose cellulose fibres, used to produce the composites, were also tested for their environmental impact.
