A review of neurophysiological and genetic correlates of emotional intelligence

Abstract: The article is an overview of modern studies of brain organization and genetic correlates of emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is becoming the subject of more and more attentive study of psychologists due to the fact that it influences the mental development of humans, plays an important role in many professions, and its impairment is a marker of some disorders. Nevertheless, the brain organization and genetic correlates of emotional intelligence have not been studied enough – first studies appear… Show more

“…In fact, there now seems to be a wide consensus that the ability and trait models to EI are complementary rather than a sign of contradiction or confusion and that both should be included in EI research [ 30 , 31 ]. Recently, research also has focused on the configural model [ 32 ], wherein emotional states are attributed to the visual and auditory non-verbal cues, and the neurological model [ 33 ], which seeks to characterize the neural mechanisms of EI.…”

“…Genetic studies of the association of various genes with personality traits, including those describing the emotional-volitional sphere, are mainly focused on the study of genes of neurotransmitter systems and enzymes of their metabolism [4]. The enzyme monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) promotes the breakdown of dopamine and serotonin in the intersynaptic space, and catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) is involved in the transmission of catecholamines (dopamine, norepinephrine, adrenaline).…”
