A review of North and Central American Paragrilus Saunders, 1871 (Coleoptera: Buprestidae: Agrilinae)

Abstract: The buprestid genus Paragrilus Saunders, 1871 is reviewed for North and Central America. Of 18 species that are recognized, six are described as new: P. akersi, P. burkei, P. heliocarpi, P. moldenkei, P. fallorum, and P. azureus. Species fall into three species groups, the P. rugatulus group, the P. trifoveolatus group, and the P. aeraticollis group. Four species are considered to occur in the United States: P. burkei, P. lesueuri Waterhouse, P. rugatulus Thomson, and P. tenuis (LeConte). A key is given to sep… Show more

“…We chose 228 species (see Appendix S1 in Supporting Information) belonging to 33 genera of Buprestidae; these species have been relatively well collected and studied in Mexico in comparison with the remaining buprestid taxa. We obtained distributional information on these species from published taxonomic revisions, notes and descriptions of new species (Dugès, 1891; Fisher, 1949; Nelson, 1962, 1968, 1971, 1975a–c, 1980a,b, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1999, 2000a,b; Hespenheide, 1974, 2002; Nelson & Westcott, 1976, 1995; Westcott et al. , 1979, 1989; Nelson et al.…”

“…Beetle specimens were deposited in the University of Morelos Insect Collection (‘Colección de Insectos de la Universidad de Morelos’ [CIUM]). The material was identified by taxonomic keys (Hespenheide, 2002; Hespenheide & Bellamy, 2009; Nelson, 1975), compared with reference material deposited in the CIUM and corroborated by specialists in the group (Dr. H. A. Hespenheide, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of California).…”

“…Obenberger (1932), ao descrever o gênero Bakerietta, (sinonimizado com Callimicra por), o situa em uma transição entre "Agrilites" e "Trachites" destacando sua semelhança com Paragrilus e Velutia. Além dissoHespenheide (2002), aponta que diversas espécies de Paragrilus foram descritas e incluídas erroneamente dentro da tribo Tracheini, provavelmente devido às semelhanças externas.Figuras 263-268.
