A review of performance measurement: Towards performance management

Abstract: Describes the evolution of performance measurement in four sections: recommendations, frameworks, systems, and inter-organisational performance measurement. Measurement begins with a recommendation, which is a piece of advice related to the measures or structure of performance measurement; frameworks can be dichotomised into a structural and procedural typology that suggests structural framework development has outstripped procedural framework development. The basic requirements for a successful PM system are … Show more

“…Graven (2002) notes that a more glaring pricing attracts customers and encourages insurer firms bid for business having alternated the price. While Lohman et al (2004) provide evidence which gave an indication of the alignment between improved performance measurement and supply chain management, Folan and Browne (2005) segmented the development of measures of performance into four different categories, viz: (i) frameworks; (ii) systems; (iii) inter-organizational performance measurement and (iv) recommendations.…”

“…Some example of those approaches are the ones presented by Kaplan e Norton (1992), Bitici (1995), Neely (1996) or Kenny (2005). Folan et al (2005) presented an interesting review on the frameworks and systems for performance measurement. Kenny (2005) proposed a methodology that encompasses the identification of the key stakeholders, the identification of the strategic factors for them, the objectives setting to all key stakeholders and the definition of performance measures derived from those objectives.…”

“…The implementation methodology of a performance measurement system can also vary depending upon recommendation, frameworks, systems and inter-organizational performance measurement [38]. However, selection of suitable ICTs, especially the big data technologies, that will support the decision making process for the specific performance measurement is an important activity.…”
