Exploiting the synergy between organic polymer electrolytes and inorganic electrolytes via the development of composite electrolytes can suggest solutions to the current challenges of next‐generation solid‐state lithium‐metal batteries (SSLMBs). Depending upon a mass fraction of inorganic fillers and organic polymers, composite electrolytes are broadly classified into “ceramic‐in‐polymer” (CIP) and “polymer‐in‐ceramic” (PIC) categories, inheriting distinct structure and electrochemical properties. Since the stability and electrochemical characteristics of the inorganic phase are superior to those of the organic phase for lithium‐ion conduction, applying lithium‐enrich active filler in PIC seems more promising. The inorganic phase preserves the primary migratory channels in the PIC electrolyte, while the viscoelastic properties attempt to be introduced from the organic binder or host. The present work overviews the studies on state‐of‐the‐art PIC electrolytes, the fundamental mechanism of ionic conduction, preparation methods, and current progress in materials development for SSLMBs. In addition, the modification strategies for improving the electrode–electrolyte interface are also emphasized. Moreover, it further prospects the current challenges and effective strategies for the future development of PICs‐based CPEs to accelerate the practical application of SSLMBs. This review examines the progress and outlook of PIC‐based electrolytes for next‐generation lithium batteries.

Promoting safer and more cost‐effective lithium‐ion battery manufacturing practices, while also advancing recycling initiatives, is intrinsically tied to reducing reliance on fluorinated polymers like polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) as binders and minimizing the use of hazardous and expensive solvents such as N‐methyl pyrrolidone (NMP). In pursuit of this objective, olefin‐ and rubber‐based polymers have been investigated as promising alternatives for binder materials in high‐energy Ni‐rich LiNixCoyMnzO2 (NCM, x≥0.8) cathodes for lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). Alternative binders such as polyisobutylene (PIB), poly(styrene‐butadiene‐styrene) (SBS), nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), and its hydrogenated version (HNBR) offer versatile solutions. These polymers can be dissolved in industrial solvents, such as toluene, and have been further processed into homogeneous cathode slurries, thus facilitating the manufacturing of high‐energy Ni‐rich NCM cathodes for lithium‐ion batteries. The evaluation of NCM811 cathodes obtained from PIB, SBS, NBR, and HNBR has involved a thorough assessment of their physical and chemical properties, electrochemical performance, and production expenses, compared with NCM811 cathodes based on PVDF. Notably, cathodes employing PIB and HNBR have exhibited outstanding qualities, showcasing high specific capacity and remarkable electrochemical stability akin to PVDF‐based counterparts. Furthermore, the alternative binders′ superior adhesion, elasticity, and thermal stability have facilitated obtaining uniform and mechanically stable cathode films. Furthermore, using toluene, with its low vapor pressure, has significantly reduced energy costs associated with drying processes, thereby enhancing the overall cost‐effectiveness of the NCM811 cathodes.

Tailoring Binder Molecular Weight to Enhance Slurry‐Cast NMC Cathodes for Sulfide Solid‐State Batteries

We demonstrate for the first time the critical influence of binder molecular weight on the performance of slurry‐cast lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide (NMC) cathodes in sulfide‐based all‐solid‐state batteries (SSBs). SSBs are increasingly recognized as a safer and potentially more efficient alternative to traditional Li‐ion batteries, owing to the superior ionic conductivities and inherent safety features of sulfide solid electrolytes. However, the integration of high‐voltage NMC cathodes with sheet‐type sulfide solid electrolytes presents significant fabrication challenges. Our findings reveal that higher molecular weight binders not only enhance the discharge capacity and cycle life of these cathodes but also ensure robust adhesion and structural integrity. By optimizing binder molecular weights, we effectively shield the active materials from degradation and mechanical stress, significantly boosting the functionality and longevity of SSBs. These results underscore the paramount importance of binder properties in advancing the practical application of high‐performance all‐solid‐state batteries.
