Aprotic lithium-oxygen (Li-O 2 ) batteries represent a promising next-generation energy storage system due to their extremely high theoretical specific capacity compared with all known batteries. Their practical realization is impeded, however, by the sluggish kinetics for the most part, resulting in high overpotential and poor cycling performance. Due to the high catalytic activity and favorable stability of Co-based transition metal oxides, they are regarded as the most likely candidate catalysts, facilitating researchers to solve the sluggish kinetics issue. Herein, this review first presents recent advanced design strategies for Co-based transition metal oxides in Li-O 2 batteries. Then, the fundamental insights related to the catalytic processes of Co-based transition metal oxides in traditional and novel Li-O 2 electrochemistry systems are summarized.Finally, we conclude with the current limitations and future development directions of Co-based transition metal oxides, which will contribute to the rational design of catalysts and the practical applications of Li-O 2 batteries.

Lithium–oxygen (Li–O2) batteries have received much attention in recent years due to their ultrahigh theoretical specific energy that could transform current energy storage, should a practical device be realized. At the fundamental level, substantial progress in the understanding of the reactions and processes occurring in Li–O2 batteries has been made; however, significant disputes still remain for the operational mechanisms. Herein, we demarcate the scope of this review to the lithium-mediated oxygen reactions at the Au|DMSO interface. As regards this model electrochemical interface, we first summarize the current understandings of the oxygen reaction mechanisms and the dynamic reaction interfaces, and then, we offer our perspectives on the remaining issues and puzzles, including how the oxygen reaction mechanisms and their associated interfaces are influenced by the electrode surface conditions, the electrolyte compositions, the sensitivity and spatiotemporal resolution of characterization methods, and the operating conditions of the Li–O2 batteries.

Copper sulfide with flower-like (f-CuS) and carambola-like (c-CuS) morphologies was successfully synthesized by a facile one-step solvothermal route with different surfactants. When employed as cathode catalysts for lithium–oxygen batteries (LOBs), f-CuS outperforms c-CuS in terms of oxygen electrochemistry, judging from the faster kinetics and the higher reversibility of oxygen reduction/oxidation reactions, as well as the better LOB performance. Moreover, an abnormal high-potential discharge plateau was observed in the discharge profile of the LOB. To understand the different performances of f-CuS and c-CuS and the abnormal high-potential plateau, theoretical calculations were conducted, based on which a mechanism was proposed and verified with experiments. On the whole, CuS can work as a multifunctional catalyst for promoting LOB performance, which means that the dissolved CuS in LiTFSI/TEGDME electrolyte can serve as a liquid catalyst by the redox couples of Cu(TFSI)2/Cu(TFSI)2 –/Cu(TFSI)2 2–, in addition to the function as a traditional solid catalyst in the cathode.
