The accuracy of flux linkage measurement is significantly important for a number of sensorless control methods for switched reluctance motor (SRM). This study proposes a novel flux linkage measurement circuit with the automated resistance correction, which comprises only circuit components. During the SRM sensorless operation, the dependence of resistance on temperature leads to the errors in flux linkage measurement and position estimation. The developed scheme is based on the zero-crossing property which asserts that the flux linkage and current pass through zero simultaneously. Hence, the flux linkage error captured at the time when the current falls to zero represents the resistance error and is used for resistance correction. The proposed circuit has been successfully implemented and tested on a sensorless SRM system. Experiment results indicate that the proposed system in sensorless control can be operated stably at different load torques and at the condition of given speed mutation and load mutation, and the speed range in steady state with rated load torque is 0-160 r/min. The overall estimated position error remains within an acceptable margin of 2%. Hence, it significantly improves the sensorless position estimation and thus SRM performance. This paper presents direct torque control of Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) using Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) for electric vehicles applications. The PD-FLC is proposed for SRM torque control, to keep the torque of the motor shaft in tracking the reference torque with high accuracy. With the help of FLC techniques, the SRM torque ripples can be reduced compared to traditional control techniques. In this study, the nonlinear 6/4 SRM model is simulated with the symmetrical converter, and the converter controller is programmed using C-language. The proposed method is tested at different load and variable speed conditions, and the obtained results confirm that the FLC direct torque control can be used for torque control to improve the motor performance and reduce the torque ripples compared to other techniques such as direct instantaneous torque control.

There are many types of electrical machines suitable for electric vehicles. Nowadays, most manufacturers and researchers tend towards two major alternatives: permanent magnet synchronous machines and induction machines. However, these are not the only competitive candidates. Reluctance machines, which have been well-known for some decades already, present some interesting advantages. For instance, switched reluctance machines are intrinsically redundant and fault-tolerant, which makes them attractive for applications in which robustness is compulsory. In this sense, switched reluctance drives can keep working even when one of their phases loses its functionality for any reason. In an electric vehicle, this would mean being able to keep driving the vehicle even after some failures, although with reduced performance (in degraded mode). In this chapter, switched reluctance drives for traction applications are analyzed, focusing on their capability to operate in degraded mode (with m-1 phases available).
