A review of research on the distribution, ecology, behaviour, and conservation of the Slender Loris Loris lydekkerianus (Mammalia: Primates: Lorisidae) in India

Abstract: The Slender Loris in India includes two subspecies, the Mysore Slender Loris and the Malabar Slender Loris, with unidentified populations at overlapping ranges of the subspecies. Prior to 1996, the knowledge on Indian lorises was mostly limited to laboratory studies, or some anecdotes from the wild. Since late 1990, several intensive field studies have been carried out which informed about the status, ecology, behaviour, conservation issues, and management of the Slender Loris in India. Here, we review all the… Show more

“…Existing natural trails were used as transects in the forests for the surveys following the best recommendations [4,5]. A survey was carried out using headlamps covered with red filters, as lorises are not disturbed by a red light compared to white light [6][7][8][9]. Vehicle surveys and foot transects were also adopted and followed depending on the access and topography of the terrain for the surveys [10,11].…”

“…They belong to the family Lorisidae, which also includes slow lorises, pottos, and angwantibos. Slender lorises are confined to India and Sri Lanka, where they inhabit dry to moist and lowland to montane forests [2]. Slender lorises are characterized by their small size, long limbs, vestigial tail, large eyes, and slow locomotion.…”
