A Review of Retrofit Interventions for Residential Buildings in Hot Humid Climates

Abstract: Buildings consume 40% of resources around the world, low energy building is fast becoming a major component of sustainable development. However, limiting the concept of low energy buildings to new builds will only undermine its effects and benefits as there are numerous existing buildings that consume uneconomical energy resources irrespective of how energy efficient the new ones are. Therefore, retrofit interventions to existing buildings is important in decreasing resource consumption and increasing energy e… Show more

“…Therefore, since the house is situated within a low-income community, the interventions recommended have to be effective, easily achievable, and inexpensive. Hence, the authors considered the use of roof insulation, which has been recommended by previous authors [58,59], as an effective solution to curb solar heat gains in buildings situated along the equator (Figures 11 and 12). In addition, the authors considered the replacement of incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs to reduce internal heat gains (Figures 13 and 14).…”

“…The below-highlighted strategies are among the most common green improvements that have potential utilization in terrace house retrofitting. Ayodele et al, (2020) assert the key indicators for an effective retrofit strategy include minimization of energy consumption while conserving thermal comfort, upgrading architectural quality, acquiring a controlled impact of carbon emission, and making the expected cost of a retrofit intervention significant. The study further suggests that the building envelope is a critical factor influencing Siti Aishah Ramli, Julitta Yunus, Rumaizah Mohd Nordin, & Padzil@Fadzil Hassan, Mohd Tajul Izrin Mohd Tajul Hasnan Auspicious Green Retrofit Strategies for Two-Story Terrace House in Malaysia the amount of energy usage in a building.…”
