Diabulimia is not a clearly established diagnosis, however, it is a term used in the literature to refer to insulin-dependent individuals who restrict its use to control or lose weight. There are multiple etiological factors associated with this condition, not only linked to aesthetic issues, but also associated with the distress experienced to achieve a good diabetes control, as well as the mental health including the grieving process regarding the diagnosis of their pathology, self-esteem, and body image. Different screening tools have been developed that allow to identify if persons living with type 1 diabetes mellitus present disordered eating behaviors and restriction in the use of insulin. It is essential to explore the presence of diabulimia in this population and implement intervention strategies in a specialized and individualized manner, since this behavior is associated with important alterations derived from the lack of glycemic control, such as frequent episodes of diabetic ketoacidosis and the early development of microvascular and macrovascular complications of diabetes.
