A Review of Salinity Problems of Organisms in United States Coastal Areas Subject to the Effects of Engineering Works

Abstract: The nongaseous substances that normally move in and out of cells are metabolites, water and salts. The common salts in water determine its salinity, and the definition of sea water salinity and its composition are discussed. The relationships of salinity to all phyla of animals living in the coastal waters are reviewed, with emphasis on the estuaries of the Gulf and Atlantic coasts of the United States, which are particularly influenced by coastal engineering works and changes of salinity caused thereby. The fa… Show more

“…During this period, salinity was about 23 (March) and 26 (April) compared with about 30.5 (March) and 34 (April) in 2012. Salinity has been reported to influence the abundance and distribution of hydromedusae in other estuaries [61,62]. In Mississippi Sound, the incidence of hydromedusae was highest at 25.1 to 30 below and above which the abundance decreased [61].…”

“…Salinity has been reported to influence the abundance and distribution of hydromedusae in other estuaries [61,62]. In Mississippi Sound, the incidence of hydromedusae was highest at 25.1 to 30 below and above which the abundance decreased [61]. With the occurrence and high abundance of hydromedusae, ctenophores [42] and scyphozoan jellyfish in the MCBs, and their documented negative impacts on the standing stock of planktonic communities [31,45,47,48], the slow rate of recovery of the hard clam population abundance in the MCBs is not surprising.…”

“…A few freshwater turtles are washeddown into low-salinity waters following freshets, floods, and rain storms on the coast. The writer once pickedup a snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentzna) at the mouth of Biloxi Bay (Gunter et al 1973). Water salinity was 16.9 ppt.…”

“…Perkinsus marinus, an oyster parasite, has been suggested as a cause of massive mortalities in Mississippi oysters (Gunter andDemoran 1970, 1971;Gunter et al 1974;Overstreet 1978). Although Owen (1950) did not find the parasite in Mississippi oysters, it is known to occur (Mackin 1962;Ray 1954;McGraw 1980;Demoran, personal communication).…”
