A review of ship collision risk assessment, hotspot detection and path planning for maritime traffic control in restricted waters

Abstract: The three research topics, ship collision risk assessment, ship traffic hotspot detection and prediction, and collision-avoidance based ship path planning, are vital for next-generation vessel traffic management and monitoring systems. The system development is closely related to big data analytics and artificial intelligence for restricted waters. This study, therefore, aims to analyse the state-of-the art of these three topics over the latest decade, identify research gaps, and shed light on future research … Show more

“…For example, the situation awareness for navigation must reach beyond the physical observation domain (i.e. collision risk evaluation and prediction, the effect of environmental conditions on collision risk) (Fang et al, 2018a;Yu et al, 2019Yu et al, , 2021aYu et al, , 2021bYu et al, , 2023Xu et al, 2021Xu et al, , 2023Liu et al, 2023) and the mutual dependability risk reconnaissance between cyber and physical systems.…”

“…Graph theory can be applied to layout [21] and scheduling problems [22,23]. Moreover, the utilization of graphs is possible in route planning [24,25] and analysis of transportation networks [26][27][28]. However, the application of graph theory for the analysis of regularities and correlations of ship behavior in port areas has been underexplored in the existing literature.…”
