Solar photovoltaic-powered water pumping systems are becoming very successful in regions where there is no opportunity for connecting the electric grid. The photovoltaic technology converts solar energy into electrical energy for operating direct current (DC) or alternating current (AC) motor-based water pump. In the case of a solar AC motor water pump, it engages two energy conversion stages (DC-DC and DC-AC) in the power conditioning unit. This usually resulted in increased size, cost, and complexity and decreases the efficiency of the entire system. The existing two-level inverter (DC-AC) stage generates higher harmonics in output voltage and higher electromagnetic interference that deteriorates directly the AC motor performance. Therefore, as a solution to the addressed problems, in this study, an innovative seven-level inverter with five power semiconductor switches for the operation of 0.5 HP single-phase induction motor pump had been investigated. The proposed multilevel inverter has the capability of providing lesser harmonic voltage that reduces filter requirements; along with this, other part components are used lesser when compared to other conventional multilevel inverters. To provide better insight into the work performance of this proposed topology, the simulation is executed in the MATLAB/Simulink environment, and hardware implementation of the same is depicted. From the results, it is observed that the proposed multilevel inverter topology obtained a total power loss of 1.6034 W and efficiency at 98.11%. This quality output voltage acquired from the multilevel inverter had been fed to drive the induction motor water pump; it pumped the water at the desired flow rate accordingly.

A Cost-Effective Methodology for Sizing Solar PV Systems for Existing Irrigation Facilities in Chile

Abstract:In the last five years, the Chilean Ministries of Agriculture and Energy developed a national strategy to incorporate renewable energies into various economic sectors. Since 2013, more than 1500 off-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, with power ranging from 1 kW to 3 kW, were installed to drive existing irrigation systems in small and medium-sized farms for the exportation of fresh fruit. A net billing regulation was also implemented in 2014. This study shows a cost-effective methodology for the sizing of solar PV systems for existing irrigation facilities in Chile, in an effort to improve the competitiveness of the fresh-fruit industry. The same methodology may also be implemented in other Latin American countries. The article presents the analysis of four projects (two in the Atacama Region, and two in the Maule Region). The baseline situation of the four units was studied, as well as the energy-efficient actions that may be applied, in addition to the recommended characteristics of the selected PV system to drive the irrigation systems of small fresh-fruit farms. Off-grid and on-grid solar PV systems were analyzed, including some particularities of the Chilean regulations. The required water demand of the irrigation systems and their corresponding pressure heads were also determined. The electricity demand of the system was calculated, and the PV system was designed for an optimal irrigation system. Additionally, an economical assessment was made for two years. In the first year, the cost effectiveness of energy-efficient actions was evaluated for the irrigation system, and it was found that they had paybacks of approximately two years. In the second year, the implementation of a PV system in each demonstrative unit was evaluated. The on-grid solar PV system performed better than the off-grid system, with evaluated paybacks of approximately 12 years. Finally, some recommendations for a well-designed on-grid solar PV system were made on the basis of it lasting over 25 years, with an adequate operation and maintenance plan.

Summary The motor speed is variable in stand‐alone solar water pumping system (SWPS) due to intermittent nature of solar source. Hence, water flow is fluctuating under variation of sun radiation in stand‐alone SWPS, which leads to issues like underutilization of motor capacity and increase in irrigation time. Therefore, the reliability of stand‐alone SWPS is less in terms of water delivery. To increase water delivery over a day, grid‐connected SWPS is developed in this article utilizing the diode bridge as grid‐interface converter. The presented system consists of boost converter for maximum power tracking and voltage source inverter (VSI) for motor power control. In grid‐connected mode, the solar photovoltaic (SPV) power varies under the variation of ambient conditions, but the system assures maximum water delivery by drawing deficit power from the grid. This system also supports stand‐alone operation where the motor speed and corresponding water flow vary with change in ambient conditions. Because of unidirectional diode rectifier, the DC‐bus voltage rises to a high value when SPV power is more than motor power. This happens during starting of the motor when motor power rises slowly and does not match with a maximum SPV power. To tackle this issue, finite state machine (FSM)‐based power limit maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm is implemented in this development. The algorithm ensures SPV power below the motor power under DC‐bus voltage rise condition. An experiment prototype is developed, and the control system is implemented on 32‐bit ARM Cortex M4 microcontroller. Experiments are performed to investigate the performance of the presented system under steady‐state and transient conditions.
