A review of the Blaesiina (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae, Cetoniinae, Gymnetini)

Abstract: Th e two genera comprising the subtribe Blaesiina (Scarabaeidae: Cetoniinae: Gymnetini) are reviewed. Each genus contains two species, with Blaesia Burmeister occurring in southern South America and Halff terinetis Morón & Nogueira occurring in northern Mexico. Descriptions, keys, distributions, biology, and illustrations are provided. Th e biogeography of the Blaesiina is discussed with a hypothesis to explain the current disjunct distributions. I provide a new state record for Halff terinetis gonzaloi Morón … Show more

“…In Brazil, works carried out on Gymnetis are restricted to studies on the occurrence and diversity of the species (Morón 2004, Ratcliffe 2004, Gonçalves & Louzada 2005, Rodrigues et al 2013, Puker et al 2014. In this work, we present for the first time information on the biology and descriptions of 3 rd instar larva and pupa of G. rufilateris (Illiger, 1800).…”

“…In Brazil, studies have mainly provided descriptions of life stages and species diversity (Vanin & Costa ; Ratcliffe & Deloya ; Micó et al , ; Ratcliffe & Micó ; Gonçalves & Louzada ; Ratcliffe , , ; Orozco ; Puker et al ), and most of these studies were carried out in the Southern and Southeastern regions of the country. Two further studies were carried out in the Midwest region and nine species were reported (Garcia et al ; Rodrigues et al ).…”

“…A key to the New World genera of Gymnetini does not exist, and so a further rationale for my ongoing generic revisions (Ratcliffe 1978(Ratcliffe , 2004(Ratcliffe , 2005(Ratcliffe , 2010(Ratcliffe , 2011(Ratcliffe , 2012(Ratcliffe , 2013a(Ratcliffe , b, 2014a(Ratcliffe , b, 2015Morón and Ratcliffe 1984;Deloya and Ratcliffe 1988;Ratcliffe and Deloya 1992;Ratcliffe and Micó 2001;Ratcliffe and Warner 2011) is to better characterize the genera, establish their number, incorporate them into a future key, and to understand the diversity of the Gymnetini. The New World gymnetines are distributed from the central United States south to Argentina, with only a few species occurring in the West Indies.…”
