A Review of the Family Portulacaceae

Abstract: A number of attributes that has proved useful to delimit subfamilial taxa within the Portulacaceae are critically assessed and some little used ones are introduced. The attributes are polarised by an outgroup comparison and a Wagner tree constructed. Some reversals which occur on this tree are considered unacceptable and branches are moved to eliminate this factor, although a longer tree, in terms of character state changes, is produced. A phylogenetic sequence is proposed on this basis and a new classificatio… Show more

“…In our analyses, different partitions and analytical methods also gave different branching patterns within the ACPT clade. Parsimony analyses of the IR partition recovered a branching pattern (with support less than 50%) similar to the morphological cladistic analysis of Carolin (1987). Parsimony and GARLI analyses of the plastid gene partition found Talinum sister to Portulaca plus Cactaceae, as proposed by the morphological cladistic analyses of Hershkovitz (1993) and the Bayesian molecular analysis of Nyffeler (2007).…”

“…The monophyly of the cohort was implied by early molecular analyses (Rettig et al 1992;Downie et al 1997); however, relationships within the group are unclear and complicated by the gross paraphyly of Portulacaceae (suggested by Carolin [1987] and Hershkovitz [1993]). The addition of molecular data has resulted in some clarification.…”

“…2A and B), the spines or tubercles were hollow. Embryo encircling the perisperm has been considered as the primitive state within Portulacaceae (Carolin, 1987). Seeds of Portulaca were categorized as endospermic, although a study of embryology in P. oleracea has shown that little endosperm, if any, remained in the fully mature seeds.…”

“…As folhas involucrais, apresentam as mesmas características morfológicas das folhas caulinares, porém variam em número de uma espécie para a outra, sendo geralmente entre 4-10 por infl orescência. Carolin (1987) denomina estas folhas como brácteas das cimeiras.…”
