A review of the occurrence of hemoplasmas (hemotrophic mycoplasmas) in Brazil

Abstract: Recent studies have been conducted in Brazil using molecular techniques for the detection of hemotrophic mycoplasmas in several mammals. In domestic cats, Mycoplasma haemofelis, 'Candidatus M. haemominutum', and 'Candidatus M. turicensis' infections have been identified. These species have also been found in free-ranging and captive neotropical felid species. Two canine hemoplasmas, Mycoplasma haemocanis and 'Candidatus Mycoplasma haematoparvum', have been identified in dogs. In commercial swine populations, M… Show more

“…Subsequently, the same "Candidatus" species was found in other dogs in the United States (27) and in canids from Brazil (28), Europe (8,(29)(30)(31)(32), and Australia (33)(34)(35). Although ticks, in particular Rhipicephalus sanguineus (the brown dog tick), have been suggested as vectors for canine hemotropic mycoplasma transmission, there are no experimental data to support vector competence by any tick species (8,28,30,32,33,35,36). Interestingly, in this study, Mycoplasma ovis-like DNA was amplified only from blood samples, whereas "Candidatus Mycoplasma haematoparvum" was amplified from both blood and serum samples.…”

“…are uncultivated, small, pleomorphic, wall-less bacteria that parasitize on the surface of animal erythrocytes [13]. Hemoplasmas have now been reclassified into the Mycoplasma genus based on 16S rRNA gene sequence.…”
