Unani is a traditional system of medicine developed during the medieval period, which employs natural drugs composed of herbal, animal and mineral origin for curing human health. Fundamentally, it is based on the humoral theory postulated by Hippocrates, according to him the state of body health and disease are regulated by qualitative and quantitative equilibrium of four humours including blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile. Mesua ferrea L. belonging to Calophyllaceae family and is considered the genuine "Nagkeshara' as vernacular name. Mesua ferrea L. is commonly known as Nagkesar and Ceylon ironwood in English and Cobra's Saffron. The phytochemical screening confirms the presence of phenyl coumarins, xanthones, triterpenoids and fats as well as flavonoids as main bioactive constituents. It is possessed anti-oxidant activity, anti-inflammatory activity, analgesics activity, anti-venom activity, antispasmodic activity, hepatoprotective activity, antimicrobial activity, anthelmintic, expectorant and anti-allergic. Traditionally this plant is widely used for curing many ailments in India. This review highlights the general description, phytochemical studies, pharmacological activity as well as traditional uses of Mesua ferrea in current scenario.

Introduction: Kanakasava is the classical formulation known to have beneficial effects on bronchial asthma. This study deals with the objective to compare the phytochemicals present in Kanakasava, Kanakasava distillate, and Kanakasava nebulizer solution using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and to determine if Kanakasava nebulizer solution can be useful in managing respiratory diseases. Methods: Kanakasava, Kanakasava distillate and Kanakasava nebulizer solution were prepared accordingly and standard GC-MS analysis was performed on the samples. Results: The GC-MS analysis indicated the presence of 6, 13 and 10 important phytochemicals in Kanakasava, Kanakasava distillate and Kanakasava nebulizer solution respectively. Many chemicals acting on the respiratory system were found in all three forms of Kanakasava and some of the chemicals were having similar actions. Conclusion: Despite the fact that the phytochemicals found in the three of them differed due to molecular fragmentation during the whole process, the efficacy of the novel Kanakasava nebulizer solution remained unaffected.

Crohn’s disease (CD) is segmental, noncontinuous, subacute, or chronic inflammation that can affect any part of the digestive tract from the mouth to the anus, with a predilection for the distal ileum and colon. The incidence of CD is increasing and is now 5–10 per 100,000, with a prevalence of 50–100 per 100,000. A 47-year-old patient presented to the outpatient department of the Department of Kayachikitsa, Ch. Brahm Prakash Ayurved Charak Sansthan, New Delhi, with complaints of spasmodic abdominal pain and passage of mucoid stool with increased frequency of defecation from last 2 months. This case was diagnosed as CD in the colonoscopy report. The patient was treated with Panchkarma procedures and Ayurvedic oral drugs and found satisfactory results with no side effects. Colonoscopy, contrast-enhanced computed tomography enterography, and liver function test were considered objective parameters of assessment. Improvement was assessed on the basis of relief in subjective and objective parameters. After the course of treatment, significant improvement was seen in the grading of subjective parameters and laboratory investigation. This case study illustrates that Ayurvedic medicament can be the choice for treating ailments of the gastrointestinal tract.
