A review of the phytochemical profiling and biological activities of Hyptis Jacq.: a Brazilian native genus of Lamiaceae

Abstract: Hyptis Jacq. (Lamiaceae) has been used in traditional medicine for the treatment of many diseases around the world. However, Harley and Pastore in 2012 proposed a new circumscription for this large genus, reducing its number of species, but supporting its monophyly. Hyptis and Peltodon were used as keywords, and triage of articles was performed using genus delimitation sensu Harley and Pastore. Only 29 species have some type of record in the literature for their medicinal use and chemical description, correspo… Show more

“…Based on the morphological and molecular evidence, it encompasses 148 species. 1 The pharmacological importance of this genus in treating respiratory disorders, nasal congestion, fever, liver diseases, gastrointestinal malfunctions, skin infections, 2 and even human immunodeficiency virus 3 is well-known. Hyptis suaveolens (L) Poit is the first species in the family, reported in 1952, describing its essential oil composition.…”

“…However, only 10% of members were elaborately studied and further research needs to be conducted to know the diversity of the genus and medicinal importance of the constituents contained in them. 2 Studies done so far show that terpenes, terpenoids, lignans, and flavonoids are commonly present in this genus and the chemical compositions vary greatly among species, depending on geographic locations and genetic and climatic factors. 5 Hyptis capitata Jacq., commonly known as knobweed, is an aromatic medicinal plant, native to central America and naturalized in tropical countries.…”

“…For the treatment of diseases, they are accessible and culturally accepted, so their use is popular since ancient civilizations [1,2]. e Lamiaceae family is one of the most diverse and widespread in terms of the ethnomedicinal value and variety of plants with biological and medical applications [3][4][5][6][7][8]. Regarding the genus Mesosphaerum, previous studies demonstrate the ethnomedicinal and pharmacological importance of some species that belong to it, such as Mesosphaerum sidifolium (L'Hérit.)…”

“…Besides the research papers published over the years, some reviews concerning species of Hyptidinae have appeared in the scientific literature ( Piozzi et al, 2009 ; McNeil et al, 2011 ; Picking et al, 2013 ). A review on Hyptis, the largest genus of the subtribe, was recently published ( Sedano-Partida et al, 2020a ), pointing out the importance of these plants.…”
