A review of the recent trend in the synthesis of carbon nanomaterials derived from oil palm by-product materials

Abstract: Grown only in humid tropical conditions, the palm tree provides high-quality oil essential for cooking and personal care or biofuel in the energy sector. After the refining process, this demand could cause numerous oil palm biomass waste management problems. However, the emergence of carbon nanomaterials or CNMs could be a great way to put this waste to a good cause. The composition of the palm waste can be used as a green precursor or starting materials for synthesizing CNMs. Hence, this review paper summariz… Show more

“…CVD has been one of the conventional methods most explored for synthesizing different carbon nanomaterials owing to its simplicity and ability to produce high-quality materials (Wang et al, 2018;Fathy et al, 2020;Zakaria et al, 2022). It consists of the thermal decomposition of a carbon source under an inert atmosphere at a high temperature, in the presence of a metallic catalyst.…”

“…Europe consumes approximately 15% of the world's palm oil, making it the third-largest importer after India (22%) and China (19%) (Noleppa et al, 2016). Oil palm dominates the industrial oilseed plants sector, contributing around 39 -41% (figure 1a) of global vegetable oil production (Meijaard et al, 2020;Zakaria et al, 2022). This is due to its remarkable average yield of 5000 Kg per hectare, making it one of the highest-yielding crops (Dey et al, 2020, Durango-Giraldo et al 2022.…”

“…[4][5][6] Since the discovery of fullerenes and carbon nanotubes, the preparation of carbon-rich materials has been performed using physical methods, often relying on the pyrolysis/combustion of nonorganized carbon sources. [7][8][9] Processes such as chemical vapor deposition and other high-temperature processes can lead to various types of carbon nanomaterials. However, the high temperatures required, the difficult purification and challenging control over the dispersity of the samples made this approach non-ideal for the preparation of well-defined materials with specific optoelectronic and solid-state properties.…”
