A Review of the Role of Natural Clay Minerals as Effective Adsorbents and an Alternative Source of Minerals

Abstract: The minerals with unique properties such as natural clay minerals (NCMs) have promising approach in environmental and industrial sphere. In fact, under some specific conditions the NCMs could be used either as effective adsorbent material or alternative source of minerals. This chapter presents an outline of a general review of factors that affect the application ability of NCMs and a descriptive analysis of NH 4 + and REE adsorption behavior and extraction of rare earth elements (REE) by an ion-exchange with … Show more

“…Among most promising practical methods to achieve this, adsorption has received a great attention due to its simplicity and applicability (Piaskowski et al, 2018;Rafatullah et al, 2010). To date a wide range of materials, such as activated carbons (Alwi et al, 2020;Srivatsav et al, 2020), natural clays (Alshameri et al, 2019), zeolite-based composites (Zamri et al, 2021), and agricultural wastes (Zaidi et al, 2019) have been utilized as adsorbents. In particular, agricultural wastes have several obvious advantages, including their availability in large quantity at low cost, and because their surfaces contain a variety of functional groups (De Gisi et al, 2016).…”

“…Clay minerals are an outstanding adsorbent of cationic pollutants and have significant potential as an alternative source of REM. 21 However, further development of clay mineral applications still needs to be studied for achieving the best adsorption and the best extraction of the loaded REM (desorption). 22 Operational parameters such as the masstransfer mechanism and desorption, from the perspective of safety and sustainability, have been neglected in studies that applied clay minerals to adsorb Nd.…”

“…The phase composition, structure with large specific surface areas of the fine-sized clays results in distinct properties, which makes them effective properties to remove hazardous metals from the contaminated environments. Nowadays, natural clay minerals act as cost-effective natural scavengers for environmental pollutant remedies [16][17][18][19][20]. Moreover, the naturally deposited inorganic clays and clay minerals are practiced to use for the treatment of bacterial diseases from the earliest recorded history to recent years [21,22].…”
