A Review of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Low-Altitude Remote Sensing (UAV-LARS) Use in Agricultural Monitoring in China

Abstract: Precision agriculture relies on the rapid acquisition and analysis of agricultural information. An emerging method of agricultural monitoring is unmanned aerial vehicle low-altitude remote sensing (UAV-LARS), which possesses significant advantages of simple construction, strong mobility, and high spatial-temporal resolution with synchronously obtained image and spatial information. UAV-LARS could provide a high degree of overlap between X and Y during key crop growth periods that is currently lacking in satell… Show more

“…Remote sensing by satellites and aircraft provides the ability to collect data on a large spatial scale, but long revisit periods, cloud congestion and high costs limit the use of these tools in remote sensing. In addition, satellite images have low spatial resolution [47]. For this reason, recently, UAVs have become much more popular than other vehicles, with advantages such as flexibility of movement, ease of use, low cost and high spatial resolution [48].…”

“…By mapping the camera's positions and orientation, SfM permits the generation of multiple point clouds that represent the object's geometry, converting aerial images into 3D models [12,50,58]. Thus, the use of UAVs has been considered a new technological revolution in the field of photogrammetry since it presents a high flexibility and low cost, and a complexity of operations compared to traditional methods [30,59]. Martinez et al [60] optimised the location of risk areas on construction sites using 3D models generated by photographs taken via UAVs.…”

“…In recent years, the development and application of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been rapid. For instance, agricultural industries, construction sectors, commercial delivery corporations, and many others are now eager to adopt aerial robots to boost their working efficiency [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. Nevertheless, the payload of a UAV is limited by the fixed capacity of the battery, and frequent landing operations are required for battery replacement or recharging.…”
