A review of vehicle active safety control methods: From antilock brakes to semiautonomy

Abstract: A comprehensive review of technologies and approaches for active safety systems designed to reduce ground vehicle crashes, as well as the associated severity of injuries and fatalities, is provided. Active safety systems are commonly referred to as systems that can forewarn a driver of a potential safety hazard, or automatically intervene to reduce the likelihood of an accident without requiring driver intervention. The data from naturalistic drivers has shown that such systems are instrumental in improving ve… Show more

“…Key parameters in the braking force distribution strategy, such as the optimal distribution coefficients, need to be achieved by the genetic algorithm and weight coefficients can be used to achieve a dynamic distribution [36]. What's more, intervention mechanisms of the upper-level controller, such as the driver assistance controller or the active safety controller, need to be developed [37,38]. Taken the above mentioned into consideration, A coordinated control strategy should be developed to arbitrate control modes and distribute braking forces for the eco-driving strategy.…”

“…Moreover, some traditional control algorithms, such as PID (Proportional Integral Derivative), cannot satisfy the requirements of EV control. Several modern-day high-performance control technologies, such as adaptive control, fuzzy control, artificial neural network and expert system are being used in EV controllers [59], [61], [62].…”

“…In general, various control methods such as Electric Stability Control and Traction Control Systems are implemented for vehicle stability. With the advent of electric vehicles (EVs), stability controls such as an anti-lock brake system, a yaw stability system, a traction control system, and a roll stability system have been applied as extensions of existing studies [1,2]. With the recent emergence of compact EVs that represent the low-speed and short-range market, statutory compulsory restrictions on existing stability controllers have been excluded and the vehicles have been massproduced without considering stability control.…”

“…Accurate vehicle body control aims to take actions according to the desired yaw rate which is used to control slip not only in EVs, but also in the chassis control of many vehicles [1,3]. In addition, the desired yaw moment is used as a key reference for various types of vehicle control such as front steer control and torque vectoring [2,4,5].…”
